Thai operators eye Myanmar opportunities

22 Jan 2013

The Bangkok Post reports that Thai cellco Advanced Info Services (AIS), via its parent InTouch, is planning to expand its telecoms business into Myanmar. Wichian Mektrakarn, CEO of AIS, says that the company is preparing to propose potential investment projects to the government of Myanmar this month. Last Wednesday the Myanmar government published a notice inviting investment proposals from local and foreign companies relating to nationwide telecoms services.

Meanwhile, Watchai Vilailuck, president of Samart Corporation, stated that his company is also studying the possibility of investing in Myanmar. ‘We’re carefully weighing the key factors of possible investment, noting mobile phones and call centres as high-potential fields,’ he said. The executive revealed that since launching its iMobile handset in Myanmar six months ago, Samart has sold ‘several thousand handsets a month’.
