Chunghwa’s mobile arm eyeing record investments for 2013

22 Jan 2013

Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) is set to invest a record amount in its mobile operations this year with a view to meeting the rapidly rising demand for services offered over its network. According to Focus Taiwan, the operator’s mobile unit has set aside TWD8.9 billion (USD308 million) for capital expenditure in 2013, with the bulk of the funds expected to go towards the construction of new 3G base stations. The report also cites Lin Kuo-feng, president of CHT’s mobile business group, as saying that the operator also aims to increase its mobile network bandwidth by 50%. Further, to ease the load on its mobile network infrastructure, CHT has also outlined plans to add around 10,000 new Wi-Fi hotpots in 2013 to bring its total to around 46,000.

Looking ahead, Lin has said that CHT is aiming to add around one million new subscribers in 2013, while he estimated that total revenues would rise to around TWD79 billion this year, up from TWD76.3 billion in 2012.
