Ecuadorian government-owned fixed, mobile and broadband operator Corporacion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) has earmarked USD30 million investment in its initial rollout of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband services, with a commercial launch scheduled for May-June 2013, reports local newspaper El Universo citing CNT’s general manager Cesar Regalado. He added that the 1900MHz frequency band would be used for LTE coverage in urban areas, with 700MHz spectrum being utilised to cover a wider rural footprint. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Ecuador’s telecoms regulator Conatel awarded CNT spectrum suitable for the provision of 4G services in December 2012. CNT will use 30MHz in the 700MHz band and 40MHz in the 2100MHz/1900MHz bands to deploy LTE, and is set to become the first company in Ecuador to do so, with private sector cellcos Movistar and Claro yet to be issued 4G concessions.
