Bouygues may have to wait for regulatory approval

17 Jan 2013

French newspaper Les Echos reports that Bouygues Telecom may have to wait until the second half of 2013 or early 2014 before the telecoms regulator Arcep allows it to refarm 1800MHz spectrum. The cellco currently uses the spectrum for 2G services, but wants to re-deploy it to support 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. However, rival operators are believed to be opposed to move, fearing it will give Bouygues nationwide LTE coverage before they are able to achieve it themselves with their own 800MHz and 2.6GHz networks.
