16 Jan 2013

Zimbabwe’s second largest wireless operator by subscribers, Telecel Zimbabwe, has told TechZim that it ended 2012 with 2,582,000 active mobile subscribers, up 70% year-on-year, and 552,393 mobile broadband subscribers. A spokesperson for the company said that Telecel deployed 157 new GPRS and EDGE-enabled base stations in 2012, helping to lift population coverage to around 90%. This year Telecel plans to increase the number of base stations further, as well as grow its 3G coverage in selected major urban centres and tourist resorts. ‘We hope to end this financial year at about 3,850,000 total active subscribers,’ said the spokesperson.
