The government of Myanmar has announced that it will award two telecoms operating concessions by the end of the first half of 2013, thereby ending the near-monopoly of state-owned Myanmar Post and Telecommunication (MPT). The licences, which are to be awarded via beauty contest rather than an auction, are expected to be for valid for between 10-20 years, and the government hopes to increase overall teledensity in the country between 75% and 80% of the population by 2015-2016. Interested parties are required to submit an Expression of Interest by 25 January.
