The Daily Times writes that Chinese-backed cellco China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak), which operates under the Zong brand name, has applied to sector regulator the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for the defunct international long-distance (LDI) licence previously held by Callmate. The announcement comes in the lead-up to the end of a seven-year moratorium on the issuance of new LDI concessions: as part of the state’s agreement to sell a 26% stake in incumbent Pakistan Telecommunications Company Ltd (PTCL) to Etisalat, it was agreed that no new licences could be issued for seven years. The paper cites a senior official at Zong as saying that the cellco has been given approval by the telecoms ministry to participate in a future auction of the defunct LDI licence.
