4 Jan 2013

Lanka Business Online reports that Mobitel Sri Lanka is expanding its number of base stations by 1,800 from its current total of 3,500, in a project aimed at achieving 100% population coverage. This year the company marks its 20th anniversary since launching an AMPS network in 1993. On 31 December 2012 Mobitel revealed that it was ready to launch mobile LTE FDD network services, although it did not announce an actual commercial launch date. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Mobitel – the wireless arm of fixed line telco Sri Lanka Telecom – claimed a 23.3% share of the Sri Lankan mobile market at the end of September 2012.
