The Grass is always Bluer on the other side: rural LTE launched in Kentucky

6 Nov 2012

Bluegrass Cellular, a participant in the Verizon Wireless ‘Long Term Evolution (LTE) in Rural America’ programme, has confirmed that it has inaugurated its commercial 4G network in a number of Kentucky cities including Bowling Green, Elizabethtown, Glasgow, Radcliff and Bardstown. Ron Smith, president of Bluegrass Cellular, commented: ‘This initial launch covers a population area of over 348,000 people in our largest markets and includes the I-65 corridor providing continuous 4G LTE coverage between Louisville and Nashville … Bluegrass Cellular made the decision two years ago to partner with Verizon Wireless as the fastest approach to provide 4G LTE to our customers both locally and nationwide. We are pleased to announce the successful rollout of the first phase of this partnership and look forward to the continued expansion of 4G LTE coverage in the future’.

Kentucky counties and communities included in the initial network rollout include: Hardin County (Elizabethtown, Cecilia, Fort Knox, Radcliff, Rineyville, Sonora, Upton and Vine Grove); Hart County (Munfordville and Horse Cave); Nelson County (Bardstown and Coxs Creek); Barren County (Glasgow, Park City and Cave City); and Warren County (Bowling Green, Claypool, Bristow, Plano and Smiths Grove). Bluegrass intends to expand its LTE coverage to additional areas in 2013.

Bluegrass Cellular is one of 18 regional cellcos to have entered into an agreement with mobile giant Verizon Wireless to participate in its wide-reaching ‘LTE in Rural America’ programme. Under the terms of the agreement Verizon Wireless has leased Bluegrass a portion of its upper C block 700MHz spectrum in areas where it has not constructed a 4G network itself. Going forward Bluegrass subscribers will also benefit from a nationwide roaming agreement across Verizon’s national network.
