Softbank Corp has posted revenue of JPY819.2 billion (USD10.3 billion) for its fiscal second quarter ending 30 September 2012, up 6.2% year-on-year. Operating income meanwhile rose 6.7% to JPY210.6 billion as earnings were boosted by iPhone sales and subscriber growth which outstripped that of its rivals. The company’s mobile unit gained 320,200 subscribers in September, up from 217,200 in August, and comfortably ahead of the 158,000 users added by NTT DoCoMo. KDDI, which also started offering the iPhone 5, added 224,900 subscribers during the month.
In separate but related news, Softbank’s president Masayoshi Son told reporters that the company is considering reducing its stake in eAccess to 33% once the acquisition of the telco is completed. Softbank is also in the process of acquiring a 70% stake in US cellco Sprint Nextel.
