Cyta upgrades TE-North with 500Gbps channels; embarks on Poseidon adventure

31 Oct 2012

Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta) has deployed Infinera’s DTN-X optical transport platform enabling 500Gbps transmission on the TE-North Cable System interconnecting Asia and Africa to Europe. Cyta operates and maintains the Alexandros subsystem, part of the Telecom Egypt-owned TE-North system which stretches 3,600km connecting Abu Talat, Egypt, to Marseilles, France, with a branch to Pentaskhinos, Cyprus. The deployment of Infinera’s DTN-X platform will allow Cyta to add additional capacity to Alexandros subsystem, with the ability to upgrade TE North’s terrestrial network in the future, in order to better serve carriers who offer services in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

In another Cyta project this week, the Cypriot telco partnered Radius Oceanic Communications in deploying the Poseidon undersea cable to provide advanced telecoms facilities including managed broadband services to the offshore oil and gas industry in the eastern Mediterranean. The Poseidon system will extend for some 800km from Cyta’s two cable landing stations at Pentaskhinos and Yeroskipos in Cyprus, creating a self-healing ring, enveloping the offshore oil and gas lease blocks established for development by the Republic of Cyprus.
