India’s Department of Telecommunication (DoT) will support Russian-backed cellco Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) in its petition to the Supreme Court regarding the cancellation of its operating licences, reports the Economic Times. SSTL, which includes the Russian state amongst its stakeholders, has filed a curative petition in India’s apex court, appealing the decision to cancel its licences this year on the grounds that it was awarded CDMA spectrum, rather than GSM frequencies. The Russian government has ramped up pressure on India, invoking a bilateral investment protection treaty between the two nations and threatening international arbitration on the matter if it cannot be resolved amicably.
