Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) has given conditional approval to plans for America Movil’s (AM’s) Telmex to deploy a submarine cable system linking seven countries, reports El Economista. The planned AMX-1 cable system will total 17,800km in length and will have landing stations in Brazil, the US, Mexico, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Colombia. The company said in a statement that the cable, which will be rolled out in five stages, was in response to the region’s growing demand for internet traffic.
