Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has been awarded a contract to supply Indonesia’s PT Indosat with the country’s first commercial W-CDMA/HSPA network operating in the 900MHz band. In a press release yesterday, the equipment vender confirmed it has been picked as the cellco’s preferred supplier of mobile broadband equipment as Indosat looks to roll out GSM and 3G mobile broadband infrastructure in Central and East Java, Sumatra, and Kalimantan. The cellco’s new 3G service was launched in Bukit Tinggi and Padang in West Sumatra on 6 October, with the remaining regions across Central & East Java, Kalimantan and Sumatra ‘coming up soon’ it said. Having recently been awarded a licence to do so, Indosat is now using its existing 900MHz frequencies for 3G services, with NSN saying it plans to modernise the carrier’s GSM and 3G networks, including becoming the carrier’s exclusive vendor for radio access network (RAN) modernisation in Central and East Java, Kalimantan and Sumatra.
