Abkhaz Telecommunications Company (ATK), an operator in Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia, has completed construction of a fibre-optic network between Sukhumi and the border with Russia, reports ComNews. Chinese vendor Huawei supplied the 110km backbone, which has branches to the towns of Tsandripsh and Gagra, with a total capacity of 1Gbps. Fixed telephony and internet access provider ATK said the fibre-optic network will enable it to begin offering IPTV services in the future, adding that it plans to extend the backbone to Abkhazia’s eastern border within the next year.
