Airtel introduces Rwanda’s first unlimited call packages

17 Oct 2012

Rwandan cellular operator Airtel has introduced a series of new pre-paid top-up packages which offer unlimited on-net calling for a specified period, in a shift away from the current practice of per-second or per-minute billing. A report from AllAfrica says that Airtel customers topping up by RWF7,000 (USD11.12) will receive a month of unlimited free calls to other Airtel users. A top-up of RWF2,000 will, meanwhile, offer a week of on-net calls, while the daily unlimited on-net rate is RWF300. Airtel Rwanda head of marketing, Heritiana Randrianarison, said the package gives callers more freedom, while also making calling more affordable to all Rwandans.

As noted in TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Airtel is the newest entrant in the country’s wireless sector, launching its services in March this year to compete with established players MTN and Tigo. Airtel claimed 110,304 subscribers at the end of June to give it a 2.5% share of the overall mobile market.
