On 8 October PT XL Axiata marked its 16th year anniversary for the provision of cellular services in Indonesia, noting that it now serves more than 45 million customers in 33 provinces, 498 districts, and 3.785 sub-districts across the country. Over the past decade and a half, the cellco’s owners have invested upwards of IDR50 trillion (USD5.23 billion) in its networks and services, deploying an infrastructure which currently comprises 17,000km of fibre-optic backbone cable, 24,949 base transceiver stations (BTS), including 8,788 3G-enabled BTS to provide nationwide coverage. The CAPEX has allows XT Axiata to increase its population coverage to 90% of Indonesians, it says, including those living in border areas such as Sabang, Natuna, Simeulue, Entikong, Nunukan, Pulau Sebatik, Biak, dan Merauke.
