The French telecoms group Iliad has revealed that a mobile roaming contract between its cellular division Free Mobile and France Telecom-Orange could cost well over EUR1 billion (USD1.3 billion). Dow Jones reports Iliad founder Xavier Niel as saying: ‘It’s a roaming contract that will cost us very significantly more than one billion euros,’ before adding: ‘The deployment of our network should cost us the same amount.’ Free Mobile launched in January this year using capacity on the Orange network as it worked to deploy its own infrastructure; Free claimed 3.6 million subscribers and 6% of the French mobile market by the end of June 2012, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database.
