Antel selects ZTE for national GPON project

China’s ZTE Corporation has announced that it has been chosen by Uruguayan state-owned telecoms operator Administracion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Antel) to provide a national gigabit passive optical network (GPON). ZTE will help the operator deliver a broadband network capable of supplying maximum download speeds of up to 100Mbps under various scenarios such as fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) and backhaul point-to-point (P2P). The network will eventually be available to more than 300,000 homes and institutions across the country. ZTE will provide its convergent full-service optical access platform, ZXA10 C300, for the project. ‘We are honored to assist Antel with the GPON project deployment,’ said ZTE vice president Jiang Xiangyang, adding: ‘Our innovative solutions and rich commercial experience will help Antel provide enhanced services to its users and maintain its leading position in Uruguay and Latin America.’ The project follows on from an earlier GPON deal signed between the two companies in September 2011.
