The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has responded to complaints that operators were rejecting porting requests on ‘frivolous’ grounds by announcing that for each case, the offending operator will be issued an INR10,00 (USD184.84) fine. The Times of India reports that the TRAI has added financial disincentives for operators failing to comply with mobile number portability (MNP) regulations. In addition to the fine for illegal rejection of porting requests, the TRAI will levy a INR5,000 penalty for operators failing to port numbers within the set time-frame. The new measures will come into force in 60 days. As previously reported by CommsUpdate in March this year Loop Mobile was investigated by the TRAI for citing ‘act of god’ as the justification for dismissing a number of porting requests.
