Hong Kong mobile operator Hutchison Telephone Company (3) has struck a deal with instant messaging (IM) provider WhatsApp enabling users to sign up for unlimited IM roaming on 93 networks in 78 countries, for a monthly fee of HKD48 (USD6.19). 3 also offers a Hong Kong-only unlimited WhatsApp IM package costing HKD8. The international network roaming deal is the first of its kind signed by WhatsApp, which stated that Hong Kong is amongst its top-three markets, claiming around three million active users there – representing over 40% of the Special Administrative Region’s 7.1 million population.
