SkyNet to deliver broadband to the Colombian Amazon

7 Sep 2012

Internet service provider (ISP) SkyNet Colombia has signed a ‘multi-year, multi-million dollar’ agreement with UK-based satellite service provider O3b Networks to deliver high speed internet to the Colombian Amazon region. SkyNet will utilise O3b’s trunking services to deliver broadband access to the region, which is home to around 70,000 people and currently lacks either fibre- or microwave-based infrastructure.

Commenting on the deal, CEO of SkyNet Rene Otero said: ‘This is an unprecedented technology development in Colombia, as for the first time the people of the Colombian Amazon will have the opportunity to experience the same benefits as people in the larger cities of the country can, through high-speed internet access and fibre-like latency.’
