Broadband provider Wateen Telecom has begun a restructuring programme that will see its WiMAX operations take a back seat. Telecompaper reports that Wateen conducted a detailed review of its business and pressure from power outages and escalating energy prices had led it to restructure its WiMAX business, to focus on areas with stronger demand. In addition to its WiMAX services, Wateen operates fibre-optic and hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) cable networks. As noted by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Wateen had an estimated 244,000 subscribers at the end of March 2012, giving it a broadband market share of 12.8%.
