P1 aiming for 80% coverage in Kota Kinabalu by end-2012

17 Jul 2012

Having inaugurated commercial WiMAX services in the state of Sabah, Malaysian wireless broadband provider Packet One Networks (P1) has said it expects to have coverage of around 80% of households in Kota Kinabalu by the end of this year. According to MIS-Asia, which cites P1 chief executive officer Michael Lai, the operator looks set to continue its aggressive network deployment, with the first phase of deployment in East Malaysia to focus on Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau.

The launch of services in the region falls in line with the operator’s April 2012 announcement that it was injecting MYR30 million (USD9.36 million) to kick start its 4G rollout in East Malaysia; at that date it said it expected to launch commercially by the second quarter of the year in Kota Kinabalu. ‘Our strategy is to rollout P1 services one location at a time and best manage our deployment resources between East and West Malaysia,’ Mr Lai said of the company’s plans.
