PCCW acquires Vodacom’s satellite unit

11 Jun 2012

Bloomberg reports that Hong Kong-based telecoms group PCCW has agreed to buy South Africa-based Vodacom Group’s satellite communications unit for USD26 million. The African satellite carrier division of Gateway Communications is being sold as part of a wider move by Vodacom to dispose of parts of Gateway, which it paid around USD700 million for in 2008, following a slump in traffic volumes, to focus on its wireless operations in southern Africa. PCCW aims to expand its international carrier unit PCCW Global’s business for multinationals and carriers in Africa.
