Malaysian WiMAX operator PacketOne Networks (P1) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with technology provider Qualcomm to develop its planned TD-LTE 4G mobile service, reports TelecomAsia. According to P1 head Michael Lai, the MoU includes collaboration on developing multi-mode chipsets and devices for FDD and TDD-based Long Term Evolution (LTE), as well as network planning and optimisation, and a machine-to-machine (M2M) LTE device project. Lai added that while P1 is aiming to launch the TDD version of LTE in early 2013, it needs FDD-capable devices to allow customers to roam on other LTE networks. P1’s existing WiMAX services – currently fixed-wireless and nomadic but not full mobile – will not be integrated with the future LTE network.
