Telefonica extends cable network

16 Jun 2011

Telefonica del Peru has announced the introduction of broadband services to the Cuzco region. The Spanish telco joined with Colombian telecoms infrastructure developer Internexa to deploy more than 400km of fibre-optic cable linking the city of Cuzco with Arequipa. Spanish-language newspaper EFE reports that over the next year an additional 1,800km of cable will be rolled out, as the capitals of Apurimac, Ayacucho, Huancavelica, Ucayali, San Martin and Loreto are connected. The initiative hopes to extend high speed internet to 2.8 million Peruvians.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Telefonica del Peru dominates the Peruvian broadband market, with 95% of the market share and 875,000 subscribers at the end of March 2011.
