Azerfon to spend USD15m on network expansion

7 Mar 2011

Azeri mobile operator Azerfon, which operates under the brands Nar Mobile and Azerfon-Vodafone, plans to invest USD15 million in improving its infrastructure, Trend News Agency reports. According to Jurgen Peetz, CEO of Azerfon, the funds will be used to expand coverage of its wireless networks during 2011. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Azerfon was granted a GSM-900/1800 licence in December 2005 and launched GSM/GPRS/EDGE services in late March 2007 in the country’s main cities. In 2009 UK-based telecoms group Vodafone signed a non-equity partnership deal with Azerfon to offer co-branded services. Co-branded products were first introduced in December 2009 with the launch of Azerfon’s 3G services, and are marketed under the Azerfon-Vodafone banner.
