Close but no cigar: Cuban cable lands; launch not until July

A new submarine high speed fibre-optic cable linking Venezuela to Cuba landed on the Caribbean island on Wednesday, with its main contractor Alcatel-Lucent due to complete installation of the USD70 million system in July. The cable laying began on 22 January and underwater work was completed in 19 days. Wilfredo Morales, president of Cuban-Venezuelan joint venture Telecomunicaciones Gran Caribe, confirmed that the cable should be ready to provide high speed connectivity by July.
