Fiber Power to the people: Unitymedia meets high speed internet target

German cable network operator Unitymedia has announced it achieved its goal of expanding its high speed broadband network to 6.8 million households in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse by the end of 2010. The cableco’s ‘Fiber Power’ network, which offers broadband download speeds of up to 128Mbps, is now available to 80% of all households connected to its cable network. In 2011 Unitymedia plans to enable 90% of its connected homes to benefit from the upgrade, which is which is based on EuroDOCSIS 3.0 technology. Unitymedia is a subsidiary of US-based cable company Liberty Global Inc, which completed the acquisition of the German firm in January 2010. Unitymedia passes 8.8 million households in the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse.
