Mobile-8 to raise USD413m for Smart Telecom purchase

19 Nov 2010

Indonesian wireless services provider PT Mobile-8 Telecom is looking to generate IDR3.7 trillion (USD413 million) in a rights issue in order to acquire fellow operator PT Smart Telecom, Reuters quotes an executive from the company as saying. Mobile-8 chief executive officer Merza Fachys added: ‘We hope the process will be completed before the end of this year.’

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database writes that Smart Telecom, backed by Indonesian conglomerate Sinar Mas Group, operates CDMA2000 1x and 1xEV-DO networks in the 1900MHz band in Indonesia under the brand name Smart. It launched commercially on 3 September 2007 and began upgrading part of its network with 1xEV-DO Rev A before the end of that year, allowing it to add multicasting and multimedia content, as well as voice-over-IP (VoIP), Push-to-Talk (PTT), Push-to-Multimedia (PTM), social multimedia networking and 3D gaming.
