Indian mobile network operator Aircel has completed its pan-Indian footprint with the announcement that it has launched commercially in the Rajasthan circle. According to Telecomyatra, the cellco is initially investing INR5 billion (USD110 million) for the launch of operations in the circle, although this is expected to rise to INR8 billion within the next twelve months. Commenting on the launch, Gurdeep Singh, Aircel’s chief operating officer, noted: ‘With mobile penetration of 57% and an extremely low internet penetration in Rajasthan, there are a lot of segment based needs that an operator can fulfil for better consumer satisfaction.’
The launch in Rajasthan completes a trio of expansion announcements in the last three months; as previously reported by CommsUpdate, in August 2010 Aircel launched services in Gujarat and Punjab. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at end-June 2010 Aircel was India’s seventh largest mobile operator by subscribers, claiming around 6.6% of the market with a customer base of 41.679 million.
