MHA reprimands J&K operators over subscriber verification failures

13 Jul 2010

Mobile network operators offering services in the Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) circle have been told by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to ensure that they are following verification norms set down by the government earlier this year. According to the Hindustan Times, government sources reported that Home Secretary GK Pillai had informed cellcos that an audit of the compliance of the guidelines issued regarding pre-paid subscriber identity verification in January 2010 had revealed a violation rate of nearly 65%. As a result of the infractions the MHA has held a meeting with those operators with operations in J&K: Aircel, Bharti Airtel, Tata Teleservices (TTSL), Reliance Communications (RCOM), Idea Cellular, Vodafone Essar and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). All of the operators have been asked to ensure that they have completed verification of all subscribers, and they will be expected to attend a further MHA-led meeting in the coming months.
