India’s Telecom Commission says that within the next month it hopes to persuade staff unions to end their opposition to the Pitroda Committee recommendations regarding the revamp of BSNL. Earlier in the year the Pitroda Committee proposed selling 30% of state-owned BSNL via an IPO, and offering early retirement to a third of the telco’s 320,000 employees. The BSNL board gave approval in principle to the plans, but noted that higher government approval was needed.
