NEC to construct femtocell network for Network Norway

Japan’s NEC has revealed that it will roll out what it claims will be Norway’s first femtocell network for local mobile operator Network Norway. Under the deal between the two companies, Network Norway’s enterprise customers will be able to utilise NEC’s femtocell access points with their broadband routers, while the Japanese vendor will also provide Network Norway with the NEC femto gateway and access point management systems, allowing the cellco to aggregate and connect thousands of access points to its core network. Commenting on the development, Arild Hustad, CEO of Network Norway, said: ‘Our customers demand mobile services with excellent, stable quality. Poor indoor coverage has for a long time been an issue that needed to be solved. With NEC’s femtocell solutions we are now able to carry out a pilot to commercially and technically test state-of-the-art phone services solving the problem with indoor coverage, as well as a continuous, high-speed broadband service.’ No financial details of the deal have been disclosed.
