Uninor bags 1.2 million sign-ups in first month

13 Jan 2010

Newly-launched Indian mobile network operator Unitech Wireless, which offers services under the Uninor banner, has revealed that in its first month of operation it has signed up approximately 1.2 million subscribers, according to the Economic Times. The cellco said that the 1.2 million subscribers were spread across its seven circles of operation – Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, East and West Uttar Pradesh and Bihar– with Uninor managing director Stein-Erik Vellan noting: ‘We are building on our launch – scaling up our network and our distribution. In a competitive market, it will never be easy, but we have a long term ambition and we have made a positive start. We are still in a very early phase, but this is an indication that our price plans are perceived as attractive for Indian consumers.’

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Uninor, a joint venture between Norwegian telecoms group Telenor and Indian real estate developer Unitech, launched commercial services in December 2009, and it is planning to expand its presence nationwide during the course of 2010.
