TIM Brasil launches Alca-Lu packet transport solution

22 Sep 2009

Brazilian mobile operator TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil), a subsidiary of TIM Brasil Servicos e Participacoes, which is a subsidiary of the Telecom Italia Group, and French-US equipment manufacturer Alcatel-Lucent have deployed a new packet transport solution for the metropolitan environment on the cellco’s network – a first for Brazil. The new platform is designed to enable TIM Brasil to offer a reliable, secure and cost-effective transport of existing 3G traffic and give it the ability to transition smoothly to Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, as it looks to address future market demands. Alca-Lu has deployed its packet optical transport and microwave packet radio technologies in metropolitan areas delivering the high speed connectivity, network availability and backhaul capacity required by TIM to enhance its customers’ experience, it said in a statement. The pair said the vendor’s end-to-end packet transport solution would support TIM’s plan to deliver cost-effective mobile broadband internet access and service offerings, including mobile TV, to its customers.
