Vietnamese telecoms operators EVN Telecom and Hanoi Telecom Company plan to spend VND6 trillion (USD351.6 million) over the next three years on the construction of 5,000 base transceiver stations (BTS) to provide 3G services, according to VNBusinessNews. At present, EVN Telecom operates close to 3,000 BTS and Hanoi Telecom around 1,200. The duo received a licence to build and operate a third generation network together in April 2009 from the country’s Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) and plan to launch 3G services in the first quarter of 2010 at the latest. In addition to the consortium, military-run Viettel Telecom, and Vinaphone and MobiFone, which are both run by state telco Vietnam Posts and Telecommunication Group (VNPT), received licenses to provide 3G services.
