Mobile operator Vodafone Germany and German public broadcaster WDR have announced plans to launch an LTE pilot project via digital dividend spectrum. The project is supported by the federal government of North Rhine-Westphalia, with the 4G technology being deployed in rural areas in the region as an alternative to UMTS broadband. While UMTS achieves a data transmission rate of 2Mbps to a maximum of 3.6Mbps download, LTE technology downloads data at speeds of up to 17Mbps. In March 2009 Vodafone Germany and Swedish vendor Ericsson demonstrated the 4G technology at the CeBIT 2009 conference in Hamburg.
