Africa’s largest mobile operator by subscribers MTN Group has reported an 8% jump in subscribers in the first quarter of 2009. The group attracted 7.55 million net new customers in the period ended 31 March 2009, giving it a total of 98.2 million. MTN claimed to have reached 100 million subscribers in April 2009, although an exact figure is not yet available. MTN Group President and CEO Mr. Phuthuma Nhleko said, ‘For a 15-year-old company operating amid increased competitive intensity in all its markets, this is a most satisfactory performance by MTN. This affirms our leadership position in many areas of our business.’
