Embratel 1Q net profit drops to BRL216.7m

Brazilian long-distance telecoms provider Embratel Participacoes, controlled by Mexico’s Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex), has reported first-quarter net profit of BRL216.7 million (USD98.5 million) for the three months to 31 March 2009, down from BRL292.2 million a year earlier, the company said in a statement. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) reached BRL660.6 million in the first quarter of the year, up from BRL628.6 million a year ago. The EBITDA margin was 25.6%, down from 26.7% in the corresponding period of 2008, while revenues climbed 9.7% year-on-year to BRL2.58 billion.
