The European Commission (EC) has drafted a new plan to cap roaming charges across all European Union (EU) member states. The industry committee amended the 2007 mobile roaming regulations to set roaming price caps for the period end-June 2010 to mid-2012. From July 2010 wireless users will pay a maximum of EUR0.40 per minute for making a phone call whilst abroad in another EU country and a maximum of EUR0.16 per minute for receiving a call. Charges for messaging will also fall to EUR0.11 per SMS compared to the current EU average of EUR0.29. The industry committee also set a price cap for data roaming services of EUR0.50 per MB.
