India’s Economic Times is reporting that mobile operators Unitech Wireless and Idea Cellular have been allocated 4.4MHz of spectrum in the 1800MHz band. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has granted Idea spectrum for three of the country’s calling circles: Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Kolkata. The allocation means that Idea now has spectrum in 16 of the 22 circles. Unitech reportedly has been issued spectrum in the Calcutta Metro service area. The start-up cellco, which sold a 60% stake to Norwegian telecoms group Telenor in October 2008, is currently aiming to raise approximately INR25 billion (USD503 million) through asset sales and equity in order to reduce debts.
