BNamericas reports that there were a total of 44.4 million mobile lines in Argentina at the end of August, surging 18.5% year-on-year. The figures were quoted by local press, citing a study by consultancy Investigaciones Economicas Sectoriales (IES). However, IES believes that of these, only between 35 and 37 million lines were actually in service. TeleGeography’s latest figures, correct to the end of June 2008, indicate a total of 40.4 million mobile subscribers shared amongst four operators, led by Claro Argentina (formerly CTI Movil) and Movistar, part of Spanish uber-group Telefonica, each with over 14 million customers.
