Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) has launched a VoIP product for Filipino nationals working and living abroad, reports The Inquirer newspaper. PLDT officials admit the move may have a negative impact on the incumbent’s international long-distance (ILD) business, but hope to offset this by signing up users attracted by low-cost IP telephony rates of as little as USD0.14 per minute. The VoIP service, dubbed PLDT Talkpad and available via a software download, also lets PLDT and Smart Communications’ subscribers to call and send SMS messages to PLDT Talkpad subscribers at domestic long-distance rates.
