Samsung Electronics says it has been selected to supply Wibro mobile WiMAX equipment to UQ Communications of Japan. The latter is a consortium comprising six companies – including KDDI, Kyocera and Intel Capital – which won a licence from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) in December 2007 to provide high speed wireless broadband services. UC Communication announced the network supply award yesterday and outlined plans to launch a pilot service in Tokyo and Yokohama in February 2009, with full commercial services to follow before the year is out.
