TRAI recommends mobile TV licence auction; wants 3G licensing sooner

4 Jan 2008

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended that the government auction licences granting the broadcast of mobile phone-based television services, either via terrestrial or satellite systems. Currently fixed line telecom operators that already have bandwidth don’t need a licence to offer mobile television services. However, the watchdog said in a statement that those companies will have to take part in the bidding process if they want to offer mobile television services via the broadcasting route. It has also called on the government to speed up the 3G licensing process.
