Mexican cellco Telcel, a unit of America Movil, has no problem interconnecting with digital trunking operator Nextel, writes BNamericas citing America Movil’s CEO Daniel Hajj. At the beginning of the week telecoms regulator Cofetel set a 30-day deadline for Telmex to interconnect with cable operators and other telcos and gave mobile operators ten days to interconnect with Opcom, a subsidiary of Nextel. Nextel has been battling for years to achieve interconnection with local mobile operators and despite previous orders from Cofetel, it has to date only managed to interconnect SMS. Mobile operators have argued that Nextel must first obtain a traditional mobile licence before they will interconnect. Once interconnected, Nextel will be able to offer services under the local and national calling party pays scheme and offer more competitive prices, Nextel Mexico’s VP Gustavo Cantu was reported as saying.
