Telmex Chile has launched mobile WiMAX (802.16e) services, alongside its existing fixed WiMAX (802.16-2004) offering. According to the company, its mobile WiMAX network will be rolled out in stages and should have the same coverage as the fixed WiMAX platform by mid-2008 (around 98% of the Chilean population). While the fixed WiMAX service was originally aimed at the SME market, Telmex’s acquisition of local satellite TV company ZAP TV in August encouraged the company to offer mobile WiMAX to residential customers.
