French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent is to deploy Germany’s first commercial universal WiMAX network. The infrastructure will be based on the 802.16e–2005 standard (also known as Rev-e), and will be built for Saarbrücken-based regional telco VSE NET and WiMAX licence holder Inquam Broadband. Work will begin in Autumn 2007, with commercial operation scheduled for January 2008. The WiMAX mobile broadband network will operate in the 3.5GHz frequency band and will initially be available to residential and business customers in the northern Saar region.
